I hold a secret. I’ve always believed the world was a crooked game, rigged for the selfish and the ruthless. I’m not proud of it, but honestly, this thought compels me: I’ve spent years hoarding my bitterness like a miser hoards gold. The years, however, have a way of wearing you down even if you’re the hardest cynic. And I suppose that’s how I found myself one gray morning, staring at a tangle of fur and bones in the alley behind my apartment. He was an abandoned frazzled dog that I later named St. Rufus.

Now, I’m an old man. My hair’s gone salt-and-pepper, my back’s bowed like a question mark, and my spirit? Well, it’s been weathered by decades of disappointment. Over my long lifetime, I’ve watched the world turn, seemingly, into a giant game of “Survival of the Fittest.” It’s an unfair game where the weak are trampled …
